NOMI no Sukune is a person who appears in "Nihon Shoki" (Chronicles of Japan).
Long long time ago - around the end of B.C., NOMI no Sukune - from region ofIzumo/Shimane prefecture, kicked TAIMA no Kehaya - from region of Yamato/Nara
prefecture to death in a sumo wrestling match, provided by Emperor Suinin’sorder. This match is regarded as the origin of the imperial ceremony of sumowrestling.
After NOMI no Sukune won the match, he worked for the imperial court;however he passed away from a disease on the way to his home in Izumo.
People in Izumo informed that he passed away, lots of people had come toTastuno . NOMI no Sukune’s grave was made of stones that were collected fromIbo-river
and carried by their hands.
To look at these people who carried stones from the field, it is the origin of thename of the city - Tastuno according to Nihon Shoki and Harima no kuni Fudoki.
And there is a family crest of Senge - Nijuukikkou Kenhanabishimon is incusedon the huge stoned front door of the grave of Nomino Sukune which is sitting ofthe
middle of Mt Matoba,
One of the member from the imperial family got married to Senge recently.
Now we know people in Harima to have associated to people in Izumo in themythological age and feel a great romance.
Furthermore, a lot of famous sumo wrestlers could come to the visit to NOMI noSukune’s grave so far - especially the time of the Showa -Chiyonoyama,Yoshibayama, Wakanohana, Tochinishiki, Taihou, Kashiwado, Sadanoyama,Asashio…Every time there is a Sumo tour in Tatsuno, they pray prosperity ofsumo
There are fence round the grave who donated for it - very famous Sumo playersand observers.
Also, Sea of Seto as seen from here, is a majestic sight on a fine day.
